A Moody Modern Coastal Breakfast Nook Makeover Reveal

A Moody Modern Coastal Breakfast Nook Makeover Reveal

More dark trim and paneling has been added to the Jones house! We finished our breakfast nook makeover and I am in love with the modern coastal design with a moody twist. Added brass fixtures,  fun dalmation all over stenciling, and bright coastal art prints and rug give this space the major wow factor it’s been lacking! Also, we built our nook bench to seat everyone we knew, so come on over and stay awhile! 🙂

It all started with the walls.

I wanted to add some drama to our breakfast nook area, and I liked the idea of doing a fun print stenciling to add modern visual interest to this space! I love the dalmation print, but didn’t want it to be too over powering, so I thought it would look good to break it up with dark board and batten paneling.

And the breakfast nook makeover design was born!

To try and help me brainstorm for a design project, I like to visualize all the design elements together.  I like to put together my plans and ideas with a design board, and then go from there. It’s okay to venture off course and add and take away ideas as you go along,  this is the fun part of the process for me! You can read about my first Breakfast Nook Design Boards and how they helped me decide on several decorating decisions.

The breakfast nook makeover ideas took several twists and turns, and as you can see from the first design board we weren’t even thinking about building a breakfast nook bench at the beginning.

The idea for the bench actually started when my dad was in town visiting a few months ago. I was telling him about our plans to makeover this area, and he casually mentioned that we should do some type of bench! I really liked the idea of extra seating and our breakfast area feels like there’s lots of wasted space. I thought bench seating would fill the area out really well, and after talking it over with Bryan he loved the idea too! Bryan built the bench himself, and I’m currently working on a DIY post for the step by step process of building it!

When we were looking for ideas and inspiration on how we wanted to build the bench, I turned to Pinterest and found lots of ideas I loved. Some of my favorite bench inspirations were this beach bungalow bench and this extended seating bench. Both of these opened up the idea of having the bench extend all the way to the kitchen cabinets for maximum seating! We are definitely ready for football watch parties and family gatherings this Fall!

Before and Afters

This area was looking pretty dull and lacking personality compared to the rest of our home. This before picture was taken about a year after we moved in.

We had since painted our trim and doors dark, but it still needed some fun character. I think we achieved that, what do yall think??

After nailing down the wall and bench designs, I started brainstorming on furniture and accessories for this space.

We knew that we needed a big table for the long bench we were building, so we had a friend of ours build our table top and we bought hairpin table legs and spray painted them gold. I wanted to add more gold touches, so we replaced our light fixture with a modern bass chandelier, and also added brass curtain rods and frames.

To add some fun colors and coastal elements, I found these beautiful art prints from Danielle Cohen Art. I feel like they pull together all the moody and coastal vibes I was wanting for this area! With all the patterns and colors going on, the clear ghost chairs from Poly & Bark were the perfect seating additions for this space. They compliment the modern design without competing with the other furniture and decor.

I love the softness the blush sheer curtains and faux fur seat cushions add to the nook as well. I am planning on getting bench cushions and pillows made, but I wanted to make sure I was picking the right colors and patterns before I ordered them. I’m such a visual person and wanted to see the colors and design of the room all together before I pulled the trigger. I will update pictures with the cushions when they come in!
