My favorite desserts to make? Those that I don’t have to bake of course! I love making easy desserts for get togethers and parties that don’t have to be cooked in the oven – especially in the hot Summertime!
I’ve been making this patriotic berry trifle for 7-8 years now, and it’s my favorite go-to for an easy July 4th recipe/Memorial Day recipe to take to a party.
It’s super simple to make, and you can alter the layering and topping to be any red white and blue design you can imagine! It’s always a crowd favorite when I bring it to neighbor and family get togethers and looks so pretty on the table too!
I made it for the kids and I think at first they were intimidated by all the layers and didn’t know what to think – then once it was on their plates they couldn’t get enough and immediately asked for seconds and thirds!
Patriotic Berry Trifle Ingredients
Here are the ingredients for this patriotic berry trifle:
(1) angel food cake
(2) 8 oz cream cheese
(2) cups powdered sugar
(1) 8 oz sour cream
(3) 8 oz whipped topping
(1) tsp vanilla extract
(1) tsp almond extract
(5) cups sliced strawberries
(2) cups blueberries
In the Summer I like to buy my strawberries and blueberries from our local downtown farmer’s market. They taste so fresh and make a difference in recipes!
I usually buy the pre-made angel food cake from the grocery store bakery, but there’s also a new vendor at the farmer’s market that sells vanilla and blueberry pound cakes that I bet would be SO delicious in this recipe too.
To cut out unwanted calories and to make this dessert a *tiny* bit healthier, I leave the berries fresh and don’t cover with granulated sugar. I also always use low fat cream cheese, low fat sour cream, and fat free whipped topping.
Tip: You can prep the dessert ahead of time by tearing the angel food cake pieces and cutting the fruit and storing in the fridge until you’re ready to start the layering.
Detailed step by step instructions are below!
How to make a Patriotic Berry Trifle Dessert
In a large bowl, tear angel food cake into bite sized pieces. Set aside. In a mixing bowl, mix together cream cheese and powdered sugar on medium speed.
Next add in the sour cream, vanilla extract and almond extract and mix well. Add in 2 cups of cool whip and mix on low.
Rinse strawberries and blueberries. Pat dry with a paper towel (this helps to not make the dessert too runny)
Slice 2 cups of strawberries in quarters. Slice the other 3 cups of strawberries in thin round slices to place around the outside edge of trifle dish.
In your trifle dish, start your layers. First add a third of the angel food cake pieces, enough to cover the bottom. Next add your cream cheese mixture, covering all the angel food cake. Add in a layer of blueberries.
Then place your bottom layer of thin sliced strawberries around the outside edge of trifle dish.
Repeat layers above until trifle dish is almost full. For the top layer, spread 1 cup of whipped topping.
Now place your blueberries and quartered strawberries on top to resemble the American flag. Store in refrigerator until ready to eat!
